September 11, 2011

It's hard to believe that 10 years has passed since that terrible day of tragedies started to unfold. I was a young high school student in art class when the rumblings started. At first I thought what a terrible thing. This would soon turn into the most terrible thing I would have been exposed to in my short lifetime. My life, and the lives of my young classmates would be changed forever. Everything I do, and everywhere I go would in some way be a reflection of the events of that day. As we relive today and let the pain emerge again I can only hope that good comes from the memories and our world can only become a better place. I was a young 16 year old at the time and one of my most striking memories in the days after the attacks was the generosity from people. I worked at McDonald's at the time and they had the Ronald McDonald house bins outside of the drive through window open for donations. I started my shift after school at 3 pm and by then it was so full of money for the Red Cross that it had to be emptied. Every single person donated money that day. It wasn't just 1 or 2 dollars but 20, 50 and 100 dollars. Till this day it still strikes me as amazing. That was the world I wanted to live in everyday.

As the wife of a firefighter I can't help but feel the pain of the other widows left to pick up the pieces that these men left behind. Their legacy is left with every firefighter in the United States in some way. Firemen are a special breed of individuals. Their spirit and bravery is something they all carry with them everyday. Commodore and brotherhood are words often thrown around to describe the bond between firefighters. These, however, aren't just words they are actual symbols of a real family that exists, not by blood but not any less significant.

In 2001 I never knew I would be married to a firefighter and how hard it actually is. Every time the bells go off and I know he is risking his life to take care of another person who needs him. There have been many occasions that have been cut short because of this, many dinners left on the table to get cold, and family events, holidays, left without question.  I love my husband for the man that he is and for the sacrifices he makes for others everyday. Special people on this earth, I believe are born for this one and only job, are firemen.

Today is a day of remembrance, sorrow and American commodore. It is a day that everyone will never forget.  God Bless America!!!!

Family Room Updates!!

So it can be done!! I updated the family room to be a more cohesive style. I even splurged for the pottery barn pillows. However, I did end up spending around 250 and not 200. It was a bummer. But I just cant find good pillows anywhere. I hate it. I could have went into target and got something that I "liked" but why not go for something I LOVE! So I have been on the hunt for some new pillows. I have now come to hate throw pillows. They make or break a room, I think. And if they are wrong you spent a ton of money for nothing. From my research a good large couch pillow is about $30 retail. I guess you could make them yourself, but I really don't have time to do all that. Plus once you buy the fabric its yours. Pillows, you can try and take back if you don't like them. So in comes my pottery barn pic I showed in the last post.

But yea, those pillows weren't happening, like 450 for 5, yea right. over my dead body. So I went searching there website. They have:

I got two of each, my pillows from the couch should fit in them just fine. I do want to get down inserts so I will be on the lookout for those.  They were all $30 each with free shipping, and most of the pillows I have found are 30 or more. So I just decided to pick some that I would love. I think these will go great on the couch.

So here is the layout:

I like to use these little design websites, I think this was from my furniture site. So I can see how the room will look. It comes in handy sometimes.

I also bought some wall sconces from overstock.com I was going for the look in the PB picture above. I'm still a little bit fuzzy over them. I want it to look inviting and cozy not tacky.

Here they are. I'm also not sure about the mirror. I was telling someone yesterday that it looked like a porthole to the garage. Plus I'm not sure about the silver. It may need a paint job.

So there's the update so far. Just waiting on the pillows and making up my mind. Have a great rest of the week!

Family Room...

So here's the deal, I have the itch. The itch to "re-do" something. It happens all the time. But sometimes I obsess over it. Like right now, I can't get it out of my head. It starts with one bad photo.
I started critiquing the awful photos on Remax when I started looking for my house. They are BAD people bad. Just take a look. Some of those people don't even clean up, and the CRAZY listing agent takes a photo of the "mess". It's nuts I tell ya nuts. So I went around taking pictures of my house with my phone just to see what it might look like on one of those sites.
So here's the deal, I started this blog on a whim. I was searching the Internet one day for some pics and I came across a very popular blog. I decided I should start one too! It might be fun, its a way to get my talents out to the world. If you know me then you know I have this talent. So instead of giving people random advice when I see them now and then, I figured why not create a space for them to come and get inspired.
I get inspired to, hence the inspiration page. I get that a goal of a "magazine cover" style hose is impossible, if you want to live in it. But I can try right?
Anyhoo, Pottery Barn came out with there "pre" fall catalog. I am gaga over some of the pictures, as usual. It's dangerous people, dangerous.
Here's what's swimming around in my brain. My family room. I hate this room. Sure it looks good, but not good enough. Not magazine quality, I know I'm crazy!

Its like a hodge podge of a bunch of crap that I have accumulated over the last 3 or so years. Look even the picture on the wall is not even in the center of the couch??? Seriously.
I mean we got the new sofa, and I didn't want to just get rid of the pillows that came with it. But the focal point of the room is red, obviously. The pillows are blue and brown. Its not working. I hate it. I spend alot of time in here when I'm home. I want it to feel like the other rooms!!!
Here's what I've got in mind. I love, love, love all three of these rooms in the new catalog.

Here's the red inspiration. I will recover my old pillows, and add a few extras. Also get a red throw. I also love the oval wall sconces which i want to flank on either side of the round mirror below:

I love the idea of a table behind the sofa, against the wall, but I'm not sure I can pull it off. I am trying though.  Also, some new lamps.
So watch out, I'm going shopping tonight for some new "options". Lets see what i can pull off in one night!! O yea, I want to spend less than 200 bucks on this WHOLE room, think I can do it??  We will see... stay tuned

Boston!!

I have just celebrated my 26th Birthday and every year I usually try to go on a road trip, or some kind of excursion. This year I was pondering what to do, what to do!  We all know that I have been to New York City, many times, I was meant to live there I swear. Anyway, this time around I said I want to see a big city, and possibly a water view as well. I went to Toronto last year so that was out, I am going to New York next weekend, so that's out. I thought to myself, where can I go that is withing driving distance and that I have never been to?  BOSTON, its like a light bulb went off in my head! But wait, its kinda far... O well I will just get up early, right??? YES!  So we got up at 5 am and headed out for the 6 hour drive to Boston. The drive was easy, smooth and very scenic. I would definitely do it again. We got in around 11am. It was so exciting.

We were greeted by a beautiful sunrise....

While stopped at a rest stop I noticed the beautiful landscaping. This is what I want around my deck to look like. I need to get workin!!!

After a few rest stops, we finally got into Boston!

And after we found where to park, which was very easy but VERY pricey. We were off, to enjoy the day!

They have trolly tours, duck boats, child sailing, HUGE yachts, a ton of churches, great shopping, amazing food and very friendly people. An all around great city, and a bonus... smaller than New York and MUCH easier to drive through!

Newberry Street...

While in Bost you have to have a Lobster...

Beautiful Scenery....

Big Boats...
Big Park...

After lunch we decided to take a drive along the ocean, you know Cape Cod. One of the most beautiful places in the coutry...  We didnt get very far because we had a limited amount of time. But we stopped at a placed called Nahant Beach. I still don't know how to say the name :(
It was really pretty, very low tide...

And lastly a beautiful sunset.....

All in all, I had a great time. It was a very loooooooooog day. But so worth it. I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Have a great weekend!!!!
